In his work “No, cheers to me” (Mondadori), Michele Antonio Fino — professor at the University of Gastronomic Sciences of Pollenzo — offers a critical reading of our wine purchasing and consumption habits. His message is clear: drink wine, yes, but with discernment.

New European labels are a game changer

Since December 8, 2023, all bottles produced in the European Union must display ingredients and nutritional values. This allows us to understand, for example, the sugar content of extra dry prosecco (up to 17g/L) or the caloric impact of alcohol depending on the degree.

Should we always prefer wine from a small producer?

According to Fino, this popular belief is the fruit of an imagination built in the 1960s by figures like Mario Soldati Or Luigi Veronelli, great defenders of craftsmanship in the face of industry. Yet, no scientific proof does not demonstrate that these wines are healthier or better. Above all, it is a cultural heritage tinged with romanticism.

Is natural wine better for your health?

Choosing a good wine does not mean giving in to fashion or romantic discourse. It’s learning to read labels, demonstrate critical thinking and above all, listen to your palate before listening to slogans. A good wine is first and foremost the one you like, not the one that is sold to you as such.
